I threw my short-white-coats unceremoniously into a clothes donation bin the other day. And so goes four years of medical school. Now with two frightening letters soon-to-be tacked onto the end of my name, I’ll be moving to California to continue my training.
Four years ago I moved out with just two suitcases filled with clothes and a few pots and pans in which to cook macaroni. I slept on a camping cot in the middle of an empty room for a week. Over the course of four years I got educated, made a ton of amazing new friends, got married, and had countless adventures in this city.
Very strange and exciting to be leaving. We’ll set foot in PDX this Saturday night.

Few things give me as much pleasure as going online and buying a ticket for a flight home. I will be in Portland late on 7/12/07, and head over to Sunriver the following day. The occasion? Tyler’s bachelor party! Rather than strippers and shit like that, our idea of a good party is some good microbrew (and homebrew), fishing the cascade lakes, and maybe floating down the river. Looking forward to time with the boys!
Early that week, hopefully I’ll have some time to myself in Bend. I’m bringing one of my bikes back, so I’ll probably be tackling the Century Drive loop.
Other than that… Christie and I have to run errands to organize our own wedding, and then I have to complete best-man duties on 7/21/07 when I hand little Tyler over to Laura. I hope I don’t cry.

View of the canyon from the course…

Luckily my eyes remained unscathed by both golf balls and shards of glass…

Which is actually the original name of this town… this being the phrase uttered by covered-wagon-travelers as they pulled away from this small enclave, headed further west to the Pacific.
My last night here. It’s been a good visit with the ‘rents. The temp got into the 70’s today, which made for some nice golf. Now on my third Mirror Pond, and just enjoying the evening as the temperature begins to plummet in that wonderful high desert way.
On another note, the National’s new album The Boxer leaked. Really good. Great. Get it.
Golf pictures later. For now, gotta run.

Home for a very brief stay. I was planning on getting some important reading done, but my days have been jam packed with enjoying the outdoors. It’s funny how living in the Bronx can make a run around highway 97 seem calm and enjoyable.
Glad to get back on the mountain bike. It’s my bike’s 10 year birthday, and it’s still a joy to ride. The riding I’ve been doing in NYC has definitely helped out with the mountain biking – I feel better than I have in years on the mtn bike.
Golf is on the agenda for today. Hopefully I don’t embarrass my Dad in front of his business buddy, but it’s inevitable. Hopefully the golf course is prepared to re-turf the course after I divot the living shit out of it.

More photos here.

Christmas in Central Park
I woke up and fired up the espresso machine. With latte in hand, I’m wondering where the hell to begin this one…
Internal medicine ended well. I quickly flew back to Oregon. Christie and I went to Bend. Had an early Christmas with the folks and did a lot of skiing. While on the mountain doing some night-skiing, I proposed to Christie. The rest of the week was a blur of friends, family, and celebratory drinking. Now we are just looking forward to the morning of 1/13/07, when Christie arrives in the Bronx via a one-way ticket.
After my week off, I returned to start surgery. I don’t have much positive to say, so I’ll just leave it at that. 3 weeks down, 5 more to go. After this, my life will be much better. Okay… one positive thing I got out of this: I realize how crucial it is for me to enjoy my work, as well as have the time to enjoy the many outside interests I have (running, biking, reading MY books, music, etc).
This was my first Christmas away from home. It was weird to think I wouldn’t be with my family. Luckily, my sister made a trip out here with a case of Jubelale in tow. We had a great time wondering the streets of Manhattan together, and a delicious Christmas dinner at a brewery in the city.
Anyway… Happy new years to all. Is Dick Clark still alive?

This little weblog experiment has proved to be fun while it lasted, but I’m afraid I can’t keep up. Not that there are any real expectations, though I remain proud that I’m the number two search result for “child skeleton” on google images. However, I am facing 3 months of internal medicine and trying to maintain an outside life. Also, the domain is up for expiration in the next few months, an I doubt I’ll pay to keep this thing going.
My trip back to Portland a week ago was awesome. Great to see the people I had a chance to see, and sorry to miss many of you. It was a week packed full of a 10k race, pitch-and-put and Edgefield, a surprise trip to Newport, OR, and many beers shared with friends.
At the end of the week I finally made the jump into cycling that I’ve been itching to make for years. After riding a huge variety of different bikes, I finally found my new baby. I have missed mountain biking so much, and since mountain biking sans car ownership is impossible in the Bronx, this is a fantastic substitute. I always thought that cycling would be somewhat boring after growing up on Central Oregon single track. However, nothing is quite as exhilarating as riding through the Bronx, where a white kid in spandex is apparently invisible to every gypsy cab barreling down the pockmarked road.
When I’m on the bike I feel like a kid again. I can’t quite explain it, but it takes me back to when my brother and I used to tear around on shitty walmart bikes. We were always looking for bigger and better obstacles to throw our bodies and 50lbs of poorly welded steel off of. I’m glad i have a way to relive a fraction of that feeling.

Many years ago, I realized that people who reside on the Oregon coast are just… different. It’s a place of such striking natural beauty… and then there are the locals which consist of a curious blend of fisherman and carnival folk. I think many of them also lie slightly right of Hitler on the political spectrum.
My sister sent this wonderful photo to my phone which captures the spirit of the place.
Too bad I missed the annual Robinson beach trip. I could have used the vacation. On the bright side, at least I didn’t lose any money at the Indian casinos…

I found my sister on MySpace!! She has apparently joined the teeming legions of peri-pubescent teenagers. I really want to leave obnoxious-little-brother comments, but that means I’d have to register with this monsterous Rupert Murdoch holding, which I’m pretty sure means relinquishing some fraction of my soul.
She’s a damn good writer, so go read. It makes me miss her, P-town, touchie porn, shitty beer, and golden tee. Not the Space Room though… that place was always shitty.

I’ve been following my brother’s latest race, the Redlands Cycling Classic, which, from what I understand, is a longstanding and well thought of tour. The cool news is that his team seems to have had a pretty kick-ass day. One of their riders broke the top three, and others were not far behind.
I really know next to nothing about cycling… I used to be a mountain bike nerd, but I’m lost when it comes to road. That DNF list for the third day is pretty impressive though… it’s a brutal sport.
Now… if only I could get the road bike I have been lusting after for the past year.
In other news, I bought a few CDs, which I haven’t done in awhile. It’s one of the nice outcomes from my recent ‘cease-and-desist’ regarding my bittorrent use! HA! Stupid MPAA/RIAA/Major labels.
The music is great. I have been addicted to The National since hearing their latest, Alligator. It’s an eclectic blend of mellow-booming instrumentation, and baritone-meloncholy-poetic lyrics that leave you wondering what exactly this guy from Brooklyn is singing about. Anyway, I picked up their older CD, Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, and it is also excellent.
Also, I got a CD by Band of Horses entitled Everything All the Time, which has also not let me down. It’s the first LP from this Northwest band… nice to see that hipster Brooklyn isn’t the only foci of indie talent.
